The Apostle Peter is one of the most fascinating people in the bible.  He comes from the humblest of beginnings (a fisherman with no formal education) yet rises to become the leader of a worldwide movement   He’s known for one of the greatest acts of faith (he walks on water with Jesus) and for one of the worst acts of denial (at Jesus’ arrest/trial he denies he knows Jesus).  And while he was the most impetuous of all the disciples, he becomes a source of wisdom/stability for the entire early church.  There is a lot to ponder about Peter; but the inescapable thing about him is that he comes face to face with Jesus, and this changes him forever.  And it’s out of that experience that he writes this letter.
