Wherever Jesus went, people gathered expecting to see some combination of what his reputation advertised – miraculous healing, authoritative teaching, warm interaction, and the occasional dicey dispute with religious leaders. All kinds of people came, for all kinds of reasons – some were curious, some were skeptical, some were needy, some were sinister. But when they came, they all had the same experience: Surprise. Jesus was different than they thought. Jesus was more than they thought – more attractive, more inviting, and way more challenging.
